Rationale 

Ars artium is a syntagma that appears in the definition of philosophia (Isidore of Sevilla), dialectica (Peter of Spain) or grammatica (Evrard of Bethune). In some cases this locution is followed by expressions such as scientia scientiarum or disciplina disciplinarum. This syntagma connotes the existence of an Ars of higher order, which leads the other arts and disciplines, for instance Ars amoris and the contemplative life (William of St. Thierry), or Ars divina (Thomas Aquinas) and its reference to the causal virtues inserted in nature. The colloquium and the 2015 issue of Mediaevalia. Textos e estudos, in which the accepted papers will be published, aim to expose the different considerations about the ideal of the “Art of the arts” (Ars artium) and its influence on the evolution of Llull’s Art (Ars magna).

Papers discuss the following topics:

• The relationship between the Ars magna and the medieval tradition of liberal and mechanical arts.
• The division of medieval disciplines and the distinctions made by Llull along his works, for instance: Llibre de Contemplació, Quattuor libri principiorum, Arbor scientiae.
• The philosophical vocabulary and the meaning of the definitions of philosophia, scientia, disciplina.
• The Sciences, methods and subjects of study.
• The Lullian Art and the ideal of Ars artium from the perspective of the contemplative life.
• The “scholastic” training in the monastery of Miramar and the subsequent studium generale lullianum of Mallorca.

  

Submission Details

Submissions are accepted from researchers of all levels. Candidates must send abstracts of no more than 300 words (PDF-Word) to gfm-secretariado@letras.up.pt. Submissions should be prepared for anonymous peer review. The first page of the document should contain the author’s name, institutional affiliation, academic title, the paper title, and the author’s contact information. The selected papers should be suitable for 20 minutes-long presentation and, for publication, will have an extension of 6000 words (including footnotes), according to the guidelines of Mediaevalia. Proposals can be submitted to the Colloquium or just to be published in the 2015 issue of Mediaevalia. Textos e estudos (a peer reviewed journal).
