My current research interests are in Philosophy of Mind, Cognitive Science, Epistemology and Ethics. I´m currently developing some work on the area of theories of rationality and emotions. During this year (2006/2007) I intend to deepen my understanding of the debate around cognitive and non-cognitive theories of emotion, as well as on the field of theories of action and reasoning.

Research interests

My main interest, around which I hope to write my thesis, is about the epistemological implications of the fact that our emotions are deeply involved in our superior cognitive abilities. I´m interested, in other words, in recognizing the epistemological status of our emotions. In my work I´ll look forward to interconnect empirical and theoretical work about emotions in the diferent fields of cognitive science contributing in that way for a theorie of rationality that is empiricaly informed. My main theoretical goal will be to propose a model that bears on the essential role of emotions on rational agency.

Work in progress

In this year (2006/2007) I intend to present my mastership thesis on Emotions and Rationality, and so I hope to be able to write some papers on this subject so I can discuss my ideas with other investigators who share the same interests as me, in Portugal or abroad.
Those papers will focus on 3 main areas:
?What are emotions?? ? understand the debates on cognitivism and non-cognitivism between neurophysiology and philosophy.
?Emotions and the mind-body problem? ? defence of a particular kind of Theory of Identity of mind and body.
?Emotions and action? ? questions around motivation to act, normativity and ethics.
Roughly speaking I intend to comprehend the consequences of a non-cognitive position about the emotions to the philosophical theories on the way we can know anything (epistemology), reason about anything (theories of rationality) or make moral judgements about anything (ethics).
